Charcoal · Saffron · Open Late

Altona Kabob

For about twenty years, the charcoal grill on Yonge Street has turned out skewers of marinated lamb, beef and chicken, fluffy saffron rice, and warm bread — Persian and Afghan home cooking, served well past midnight.

Two decades on the same corner.

Altona Kabob opened near Yonge and Steeles to bring real Persian and Afghan grill cooking — the long marinades, the charcoal, the mountains of saffron rice — to the north end of the city. Two decades later it's still here, still busy.

“The grill doesn't cool down until the last guest leaves.”

It became a Newtonbrook fixture for one simple reason: it stays open when almost nothing else does. Cab drivers, students and night-shift workers all know the corner — a proper plate of kabob and rice at three in the morning.

Cooked the slow way.

  1. 1

    Marinate

Lamb, beef and chicken sit overnight in onion, saffron and yogurt until the meat turns tender and fragrant.

  2. 2

    Over charcoal

Hand-threaded skewers go straight over live coals and are turned by eye — never rushed, never microwaved.

  3. 3

    On the plate

Piled onto saffron-buttered basmati or rolled into warm bread with grilled tomato, onion and a wedge of lime.
